Urban Myths: Reasons Not To Buy An Apple Computer
This article is not meant to be a slap against Microsoft products (XP, Vista), so do not email me railing about the superiority of one or the other. It is simply a response to the question that I get asked 5 to 10 times per week. The question is a simple one - "What type of computer should I buy?" The answer is the same every time someone asks me. "Buy a Mac".
Personal Disclaimer - I use primarily OSX Leopard but have desktops that run Ubuntu and Windows XP, since a very large part of what I do requires extensive benchmarking. In addition, it would be discriminatory to suggest that I have no experience on the Unix or Microsoft platforms, rather, (trying to avoid recitation of my CV here) am more than competent on any platform. Now that we have got that out of the way:
They Are Too Expensive
This is one of the most curious arguments that I hear. Take these two desktop computers - A Dell Studio XPS starts at $1199, an Apple iMac (20 inch display) starts at $1399. Both have comparable technical specifications. With the economy struggling, saving $200 makes sense to me as well. Except for one minor issue, the Dell does not include a monitor, which would be fine as long as you don't need to see what you are doing.
I Can Not Use My Favorite Programs
Here are just a sample of programs that are available for Mac - Microsoft Office,
Firefox, Quickbooks, Adobe products (Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash). Desktop publishers laugh uncontrollably at this argument.
